S8 Maths Supplements

Maths supplements new challenges :)

Try me ... I know you can do it :)

Evan wanted to put some apples into boxes. If he puts 10 apples into each box, he would have 5 apples left over. If he puts 12 apples into each box, he would be short of 5 apples. How many apples did Evan have?

Think through which method would we use to solve this question. Comment on it and if you like you may set parallel questions for your friends to solve. Have fun :)

    it goes like this:
    10-5=5
    10x5=50
    50+5=55
    Please comment on your method as I am not really sure about my working.

    1. My working was wrong.This is the correct one

    3. 5+5 is to find out number of boxes
      10x5 is to find out number of apples
      50+5 is to find out no. of apples including left over 5.
      Hope you understand better.

    4. 12-10=2(difference in no. of sweets)
      5(left over) + 5 (short of)= 10
      10/2=5(no. of boxes)
      5x12=60
      60-5(short of)=55

  8. I used the smileyface method.
    5(left over) + 5(short of) = 10
    12 - 10 = 2
    10/2= 5(no. of boxes)

    To find the total no. of apples,

    1. 5x12=60
    60-5(short of)=55
    or
    2. 5x10=50
    50+5(left over)=55

    Answer: Evan has 55 apples.
