S2 Maths Supplements :) Yummy!!

Maths Supplements continues ...

S2:

Seth has some small rubber balls. If he puts them into groups of 5, he would have 1 ball left. If he puts them into groups of 7, he would be short of 2 rubber balls. What is the smallest number of rubber balls he could have?

    7-5=2
    3 divide by 2= ? (cannot divide!)

    The common number you should see is 26.

    5:5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50,55
    +1:6,11,16,21,26,31,36,41,46,51,56

    7:7,14,21,28
    -2:5,12,19,26

    As you can see,their common number is 26 so that's the answer.

    I couldn't use the 'no. of groups do not vary' method.
    So, I used this long method: (I decided to list numbers till 30)

    Multiples of 5 : 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30
    + 1 : 6, 11, 16, 21, (26), 31
    Multiples of 7 : 7, 14, 21, 28, 35
    - 2 : 5, 12, 19, (26), 33
    The common number: 26
